The Art Form

What is Kathak Dance?
The Classical Dance of Storytelling

One of India's eight classical dance forms — a living art of rhythm, expression and grace rooted in ancient temple and court traditions of North India.

Kathak is one of India's eight major classical dance forms, with a history stretching back to ancient temple dance traditions. The word derives from 'Katha' — meaning story — for the Kathak dancer is fundamentally a storyteller who narrates tales from Hindu mythology through the perfect unity of footwork (Tatkar), spinning (Chakkar), expressive gestures (Mudras) and facial expression (Abhinaya).

Uniquely among classical Indian dance forms, Kathak evolved through two distinct cultural streams. The Lucknow Gharana flourished in the Nawabi courts of Awadh under Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, developing extraordinary grace, lyrical elegance and Thumri-based Abhinaya. The Jaipur Gharana was shaped by Rajputana's martial culture — vigorous, powerful Tatkar, complex Tihais and rapid Chakkar define its character.

At Swar Kala Sangam, our expert Kathak teachers train students in elements of both Gharanas under the guidance of Mukta Monish Mehta — carrying forward the legacy of Prof. Baldev Singh Bali and the academy's 20+ years of classical arts excellence in Gurgaon.

तत्कार · Tatkar
The Language of Feet

Rhythmic footwork that creates a percussive dialogue with the Tabla. From basic three-beat patterns to complex 16-beat Tihais, Tatkar is the structural backbone of Kathak — measured in beats, felt in the soul.

चक्कर · Chakkar
The Spinning Turns

Multiple fast spins on the heel, executed with absolute axis control and spotting technique. A hallmark of Kathak virtuosity — a skilled dancer can spin 100+ times without losing balance or precision.

अभिनय · Abhinaya
Expressive Storytelling

The art of narrating stories through facial expressions, hand gestures (Mudras) and body language. Abhinaya enacts tales from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and the Radha-Krishna narrative — the soulful, poetic heart of Kathak.

ठुमरी · Thumri
Devotional Expression

A semi-classical vocal form interpreted through dance. Thumri in Kathak — especially in the Lucknow tradition — is pure Abhinaya: the dancer embodies the devotion and longing of Radha for Krishna through nuanced expression.

Two Gharanas, One Tradition

Swar Kala Sangam's Kathak curriculum draws from both major Gharanas — combining the lyrical grace and Abhinaya mastery of the Lucknow tradition with the rhythmic power and technical precision of the Jaipur tradition.

The Vocabulary of Kathak

Elements You Will
Master & Perform

Kathak has a rich technical vocabulary built over centuries. As you progress through each level, you will master these core elements — each one deepening your command of rhythm, expression and stage presence.

तत्कार
Tatkar

The percussive footwork of Kathak — from simple Teentaal patterns to complex 16-beat sequences and rapid Tihai cadences. The structural foundation of every Kathak performance.

चक्कर
Chakkar

Multiple heel-turns executed with absolute precision and axis control. One of Kathak's most visually stunning elements — mastered through years of dedicated technique practice.

अभिनय
Abhinaya

Expressive storytelling through Mudras, facial expressions and body language. Narrating stories of Radha-Krishna, Ram-Sita and other divine tales with emotional authenticity.

टुकड़ा
Tukda

A short, self-contained rhythmic composition combining Tatkar, Chakkar and body movements — ending in a Tihai (threefold rhythmic cadence) that resolves on the Sam (beat 1).

तोड़ा
Toda

A longer rhythmic composition involving complex footwork patterns and hand gestures, performed in multiple speeds. One of the most technically demanding elements of Kathak.

ठुमरी
Thumri

A semi-classical devotional composition interpreted through Abhinaya. In Kathak, Thumri — especially in the Lucknow tradition — is pure expressive storytelling of divine love.

गत
Gat

A lyrical, narrative dance sequence depicting a character, scene or mood from Hindu mythology. Gat is where Kathak's technical mastery and expressive artistry come together most beautifully.

परण
Paran

A rhythmic composition originally derived from Pakhawaj bols (drum syllables) — characterised by its complex rhythmic structure and powerful performance quality.

लय-काम
Layakari

The art of rhythmic manipulation — performing compositions in different speeds (Vilambit, Madhya, Drut) and rhythmic divisions, demonstrating advanced command of Taal.

✦ And much more awaits you. The elements above represent the core vocabulary of Kathak. As you progress through each level of the curriculum, you will explore additional compositions, forms and stylistic refinements — including Kavitt, Shloka, Vandana, Jugalbandi and festival compositions. Your Kathak teacher will guide the progression based on your individual development, physical aptitude and artistic temperament.

Everything About Kathak
Classes in Gurgaon

Kathak is one of India's eight major classical dance forms, originating in the temple traditions of North India. The word derives from 'Katha' (story) — the Kathak dancer is a storyteller who narrates tales from Hindu mythology through the perfect unity of Tatkar (rhythmic footwork), Chakkar (spinning turns), Abhinaya (expressive storytelling) and Mudras (hand gestures). What makes Kathak unique is its perfect balance of pure rhythm and pure expression — combining the percussive precision of a musician with the emotional depth of an actor.
Swar Kala Sangam – Pt. Bhimsen Joshi Sangeet Academy is Gurgaon's most trusted Kathak dance school with 3 centres: Sector 49 (South City II) — serving Golf Course Extension, Sectors 47–52, Sohna Road; Sector 27 (Golf Course Road) — serving DLF Phase 1–5, Sushant Lok, Cyber City; and Sector 83 (Dwarka Expressway) — serving Sectors 82–92, Vatika India Next. Online Kathak classes available across India and abroad.
The Lucknow Gharana developed in the courts of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah and is characterised by grace, lyrical elegance, delicate Thumri interpretation and expressive Abhinaya. It emphasises the beauty of movement and emotional storytelling. The Jaipur Gharana, rooted in Rajputana's martial tradition, emphasises vigorous Tatkar, complex Tihais, powerful Chakkar and dynamic energy. At Swar Kala Sangam, our Kathak teachers incorporate elements of both traditions to give students a complete classical foundation.
Tatkar is the rhythmic footwork of Kathak — the percussive stamping and striking of feet that creates a musical dialogue with the Tabla. Students learn Tatkar in various Taals (rhythmic cycles), beginning with Teentaal (16 beats) and progressing to Dadra, Keherwa, Jhaptaal and beyond. Advanced Tatkar includes intricate speed variations (Vilambit, Madhya, Drut) and Tihai cadences. Daily Tatkar practice builds the rhythmic precision that underpins all Kathak performance.
Children can begin Kathak from age 5 onwards. Early classes at Swar Kala Sangam focus on basic posture, introductory Mudras, simple Tatkar and rhythmic awareness through play-based learning. Ages 7–10 are ideal for beginning structured Kathak training with examination pathways. Adults at any age can also begin Kathak — many of our adult students start in their 20s, 30s and beyond and progress beautifully through consistent practice.
Swar Kala Sangam is affiliated with Pracheen Kala Kendra (Chandigarh) — government-recognised, certifications equivalent to formal academic degrees, widely accepted for dance teacher appointments and cultural scholarships — and Prayag Sangit Samiti (Allahabad) — est. 1926, certifications equivalent to Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Dance. Both are nationally credible qualifications for Kathak students.
Abhinaya is the art of expressive storytelling through facial expressions, hand gestures (Mudras) and body language. In Kathak, Abhinaya is used to enact narratives from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and especially the Radha-Krishna story. Our Kathak teachers introduce Abhinaya through Thumri interpretation — students learn the nine Rasas (emotional states), specific Mudras for characters and objects, and the subtle art of Bhav (emotional authenticity). Abhinaya training typically begins in Level 2 and deepens progressively.
Yes. Swar Kala Sangam offers live interactive online Kathak classes with the same certified Kathak teachers, curriculum and exam preparation as in-person Gurgaon classes. Online sessions require a clear space to move and a stable video connection. Students from across India — and internationally from Canada, UK, UAE and Singapore — currently learn Kathak online with us.
Basic Kathak foundational technique is developed within the first year of consistent practice. Prathama (Level 1) examinations are typically taken within 12 months. Visharad (Senior Diploma) — a solid intermediate level with stage performance capability — is reached in 3–4 years. Kathak is a lifelong art — there is always more depth to explore in Abhinaya, more complexity in Tatkar and more beauty in Chakkar technique. Our Kathak teachers guide progress at each individual student's pace.
Absolutely. Kathak is one of the most accessible classical dance forms for adult beginners because it does not require extreme flexibility or previous dance training. Many of our most dedicated Kathak students began as adults with no prior dance background.
